Slide in Guizhou province saw 600-meter-high knoll break free and wipe out the majority of a village at the foot of the hill.

Death toll reaches 15 after landslide in China

The death toll from a landslide which destroyed a village in southwest China has risen to 15, according to local media Thursday.

The slip struck the village of Yingping in Fuquan City in Guizhou Province late Wednesday, reported Chinese news agency Xinhua.

Outside of those killed or missing, the slide - which saw a 600-meter-high knoll break free and wipe out a majority of a village at the foot of the hill - injured a further 22 people.

Xinhua said that those wounded had been sent to hospitals and search and rescuers are searching frantically for survivors among the debris.

The village is understood top have been populated by mainly children and the elderly at the time of the disaster as most of the area's adults were at the city centre for work.

Food, tents and water have been sent to the village to aid the survivors.
