Slavyansk: Many children kept at home as schools reopen

SLAVYANSK

Many parents in Slavyansk have chosen to keep their children away from school amid ongoing tensions between pro-Russians and the Ukraine government, despite them reopening after recent friction.

Slavyansk district national education director Aleksandr Zubaryev said on Tuesday that 4,904 school children had gone to school - just 58 percent of the full number.

Parent Anna Tkachenko, who lives in Slavyansk, said she was cautious over sending her children to school because of possible military operations against pro-Russian militants.

The schools in the city were shut down on April 14 as concerns grew over Russian troops positioned on the Ukrainian border.

Yesterday, Ukraine's acting President Oleksandr Turchynov ordered the country’s security forces to re-launch "anti-terror" operations that were halted on April 15, after two people including a local politician were found dead in the country’s turbulent east.
