More than 60 "terrorists," including senior leaders, have been killed in security operations in Yemen this week, Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi said Wednesday.

Speaking to Yemen's higher security committee, Hadi called on the army and police to remain on high alert with a view to hunting down terrorists, according to Yemen's official news agency.

"Heroic operations by the army and police against terrorist hideouts in the Abyan, Shabwah and Al-Bayda' provinces on Saturday and Sunday achieved a great victory," the news agencyquoted Hadi as saying.

He went on to assert that Yemen had been among the first countries to be affected by cross-border terrorism since 2011.

Yemen has been dogged by turmoil since pro-democracy protests in 2011 forced autocratic president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down after 33 years in power.

In the three years since, Yemeni authorities have struggled to restore law and order to the restive southern Arabian country.
