Meeting would aim to formulate a unified initiative to end the political crisis in country
CAIRO
Azhar Grant Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb would invite all figures that floated initiatives aiming to solve Egypt's political crisis to a major meeting after Eid al-Fitr, a source close to the imam said.
The meeting would aim to formulate a unified initiative to end the political crisis that engulfed the country following the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi last month, the source, who asked not to be named, told Anadolu Agency.
Several initiatives were proposed by parties and public figures to break the deadlock, including Morsi's former prime minister Hisham Qandil, Islamic scholar Mohamed Selim al-Awa, and the Strong Egypt party among others. The majority of the initiatives stipulate the reinstatement of the 2012 constitution and the holding of urgent elections within 90 days.
"Some of the initiatives can be used as a base for national reconciliation," the source said.
On Tuesday, a coalition of Islamist parties supportive of ousted President Mohamed Morsi said it welcomes all local and international efforts to diffuse the political crisis in Egypt, while insisting that the return to constitutional legitimacy is nonnegotiable.
"Any initiative should respect constitutional legitimacy, mainly the reinstatement of the elected president," the National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy said in a statement Tuesday, a copy of which was obtained by Anadolu Agency.
"We appreciate local and foreign calls for dialogue and calm, and stress that calm measures should secure the return of constitutional legitimacy first."
