Turkey's population exceeds 77.5 million

ANKARA

Turkey's population reached 77,695,904 in 2014, an increase of 1,028,040 when compared to 2013, the Turkish Statistical Institute announced Wednesday.

The population figures were released as part of the 2014 Address-based Population Registration System published by the institute.

It said the male population in 2014 was 50.2 percent (38,984,302) of the total population, and the female population 49.8 percent (38,711,602).

The annual rate of increase of the population regressed 1.33 percent in 2014, down from 1.37 percent in 2013.

The rate of people living in provinces and districts across the country increased to 91.8 percent, up from 91.3 percent in 2013.

The results also showed that the rate of those living in towns and villages was 8.2 percent.

Istanbul had the most crowded population, with 14,377,018 people, or 18.5 percent of the total population.

Istanbul is followed by capital Ankara with 6.6 percent (5,150,072), the western port city of Izmir with 5.3 percent (4,113,072), Bursa with 3.6 percent (2,787,539) and Antalya 2.9 percent (2,222,562), respectively.

The data said the average age of the country's population increased to 30.7 in 2014, up from 30.4 in 2013. 

The official body also said the rate of the working population between the ages of 15 and 64 reached 67.8 percent (52,640,512), a slight increase from 67.7 percent in 2013.
