  • 15:12   (ECO) SIMSEK: TURKEY'S PERFORMANCE TO BE BETTER THAN OTHER COUNTRIES IN CASE OF ANOTHER ECONOMIC CRISIS
  • Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said on Saturday that if there had been a second global economic crisis in the world --which was a low possibility--, Turkey would have shown a relatively better performance in macro-economic indicators than other countries.
Meeting with Turkish businessmen in France, Simsek said that it was important for Turkish investors abroad to come together with non-governmental organizations of that countries, adding that they should also be integrated well in culture, legal rules and regulations of that countries.
Simsek said that while the global economic crisis negatively affected all sectors in the world, banking sector in Turkey was not affected. He said that loss of the banks was nearly 21 billion USD in 2001, while Turkish banking sectors made profit in such a crisis milieu.
Noting that if Turkey continued on its current path, it would be the 9th biggest economy of the world by leaving France, Germany and Japan behind in 2040-2050, Simsek said that growth prediction for Turkey was 3.5 percent but this rate could rise to five percent.
Simsek said that recently Turkey drew 22 billion USD of annual foreign investment, adding that Turkey, in global economic crisis period, drew 7.6 billion USD of net foreign capital.

  • 18:00   (DIP) SWEDISH GOVERNMENT CLEARLY STATES PARLIAMENT'S DECISION WAS WRONG, MERCAN
  • Murat Mercan, chairman of the Turkish Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, said on Friday that Swedish Parliament clearly stated that the decision made in its parliament regarding resolution on Armenian allegations was wrong and that Swedish government would not apply the decision.
Mercan, currently in central Anatolian province of Eskisehir to attend a meeting of Justice & Development (AK) party, told reporters that allegations that Turkish nation committed genocide would not suit the history of the nation that fought heroically during the World War I.
"It is not the duty of the parliaments to enact Armenian draft resolutions and making a decision. Parliaments should not make decisions without having historical information and documents. This contradicts soul of democracy," Mercan said and noted that there was a possibility for Zergun Koruturk, Turkey's Ambassadress in Stockholm, to return to Sweden.
Mercan said Turkey's Ambassador to Washington D.C. Namik Tan could also return to the United States when different developments take place in the future.
He said the decisions made in the United States and Sweden were far away from facilitating rapprochement between Turkey and Armenia.
Swedish Parliament last Thursday approved a resolution on Armenian allegations regarding 1915 incidents.
The resolution was approved with 131 votes against 130.
The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs also approved the resolution on Armenian allegations regarding incidents of 1915.
Turkey strongly rejects the genocide allegations and regards the events as civil strife in wartime which claimed lives of many Turks and Armenians.
Turkey and Armenia signed two protocols on October 10, 2009 to normalize relations between the two countries. The protocols envisage the two countries to establish diplomatic ties and open the border that has been close since 1993. Turkey and Armenia also agreed to take steps to operate a sub-commission on impartial scientific examination of the historical records and archive to define existing problems and formulate recommendations, in which Armenian, Turkish as well as Swiss and other international experts would take part. However, on January 12, 2010, the Constitutional Court of Armenia declared a decision of constitutional conformity on the protocols. Turkey thought the fifth article of Armenian Constitutional Court's verdict regarding the protocols was against the target and basis of the protocols.
