  • 14:03   (ECO) TURKEY, IMF HAVE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ON FUTURE PROJECTIONS, MINISTER
  • A Turkish state minister said on Friday that Turkey and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had different points of view on future projections.
Turkey's State Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan said that Turkey and the IMF had different views on what would happen in Turkey and the world in 2010 and 2011.
"The reason why we could not agree is different, we had different perspectives on future projections, but I will not elaborate," he said during Economy Press Forum of Middle East & Eastern Mediterranean Countries in Ankara.
Turkey's Economy Correspondents' Association (EMD) organized the forum which brought together journalists from Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Syria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Oman, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia.
During the meeting, Babacan said Turkey and IMF would be at a different point if they had a full compromise on a stand-by arrangement.
Babacan said Turkey and the fund had a full compromise on medium-term program, fiscal rules and targets.
The minister said Turkey had just launched the medium-term economic program, and therefore a revision was out of question for the time being.
On Wednesday, Turkey's Treasury Undersecretariat said an IMF delegation was invited to Turkey on April 24-25 to have talks on Article IV following IMF-World Bank spring meetings. Talks on Article IV was a consultation mechanism required to be fulfilled by all member countries every year under IMF Main Deal.
Turkish State Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan said that Turkey did not have any necessity to sign a deal with the IMF.
"There won't be any talks over a stand-by programme with the IMF till May," Babacan said.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also said on Wednesday Turkey and the IMF jointly decided not to sign a stand-by arrangement.
Turkey's previous deal with the fund ended in May 2008.

  • 12:55   (DIP) TURKEY EXPRESSES UNEASINESS OVER APPROVAL OF ARMENIAN RESOLUTION IN SWEDEN'S PARLIAMENT
  • Turkish Foreign Ministry conveyed Turkey's uneasiness to Swedish Ambassador in Ankara Christer Asp after Sweden's parliament approved a resolution in support of the Armenian allegations on the incidents of 1915.
The ministry strongly condemned the decision and asked Sweden to take serious steps which would compensate this decision.
The ministry officials told Asp that the decision might seriously harm the relations between Turkey and Sweden which had been developing in the recent period.
Officials told Asp that the decision was made according to several political interests on the eve of elections which would take place in Sweden in September 2010.
Officials said that the mission of parliaments and politicians was not making judgements about history, and Turkey had always been exerting efforts for creation of a joint committee of historians to discuss the matter.
Asp told Turkish officials that Sweden did not want any deterioration of its relations with Turkey, and that Sweden was sorry over the decision.
Asp also said that the resolution had been previously debated in Foreign Affairs Committee and had not been approved, however, the parliament made a decision contrary to the committee's.
Asp stressed that the decision of the parliament was not binding, it was only a recommendatory decision, adding that Swedish government would not rely on this decision.
The Swedish parliament on Thursday adopted 131 to 130 the resolution just days after a U.S. House panel passed a similar bill, raising concerns that it could jeopardize a rapprochement process between Turkey and Armenia as the two had signed protocols to normalize relations and open their border.
Turkey recalled its ambassador in Stockholm Zergun Koruturk to Ankara for consultations. Koruturk is expected to arrive in Turkey on Friday.

  • 11:45   (DIP) SWEDISH AMBASSADOR IN TURKISH CAPITAL SUMMONED TO FOREIGN MINISTRY
  • The Swedish ambassador in Ankara was summoned to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the Swedish parliament's adoption of a resolution in support of the Armenian allegations on the incidents of 1915.
Speaking to reporters while leaving the foreign ministry headquarters, Swedish ambassador Christer Asp said that he explained the Swedish government's stance on the issue to Turkish officials during his talks at the ministry.
Asp said democratic institutions took decisions on their own, however, Swedish parliament's policy on the matter had not changed.
Noting the parliament's decision was not binding for the government, Asp said the Swedish parliament supported the examination of incidents of 1915 by independent commissions formed by historians.
Expressing his country's support for the normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations as well, the ambassador said such resolution had been brought up to the agenda every year and had always been rejected until now.
He said it was approved this year as two opposition parties had changed their attitude.
Pointing to the strong relations between Turkey and Sweden, Asp said the two countries' ties would continue to be powerful, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the dialogue under circumstances like this.
The ambassador also said that Swedish parliament's decision would certainly not affect his country's support to Turkey's EU bid.
Swedish Parliament approved Thursday a resolution on Armenian allegations regarding 1915 incidents.
The resolution on recognition of Armenian allegations was approved with 131 votes against 130.

  • 11:11   (DIP) TURKEY DISAPPOINTED BY SWEDISH VOTE ON ARMENIAN ALLEGATIONS, EU NEGOTIATOR SAYS
  • Turkey was saddened and disappointed by the Swedish parliament's endorsement of a resolution in support of Armenian allegations regarding the tragic events of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire, Turkey's chief European Union negotiator has said.
"We are saddened and disappointed by this resolution. The Swedish parliament has bowed down to distorted history arguments which are far from reflecting the truth. Politicians should be looking to the future not to the past," Egemen Bagis said Friday when responding to a question.
The Swedish parliament on Thursday adopted 131 to 130 the resolution just days after a U.S. House panel passed a similar bill, raising concerns that it could jeopardize a rapprochement process between Turkey and Armenia as the two had signed protocols to normalize relations and open their border.
"Turkey is ready to face up to its past and it needs no tribunals set by foreign parliaments to do that," Bagis said, recalling Turkey's proposal to put together a team of historians both from Turkey and Armenia as well as other countries to dig into the issue.
"It is unfortunate that the Armenian state and the Armenian diaspora had brushed aside our proposal, a well-meant initiative which had been even discarded by the international community," Bagis said.
