  • 17:08   (ECO) IMF ON 2010 ARTICLE IV CONSULTATION & POST-PROGRAM MONITORING WITH TURKEY
  • The executive board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has concluded its 2010 Article IV Consultation and Post-Program Monitoring with Turkey.
Releasing a statement on the issue, IMF said almost a decade of sound macroeconomic policies and reforms allowed Turkey to enter the global financial crisis in a stronger position than many other countries in emerging Europe.
"Prior to the crisis, a more contained foreign credit-induced boom, better focus of policies on leaning against the cyclical upswing, and a more restrictive regulatory environment for credit helped limit the build-up of vulnerabilities and kept banks' and households' balance sheets strong," IMF said in its statement.
"These strengths helped the Turkish economy rebound quickly from the steep drop in output precipitated by the global financial crisis," the fund added.
IMF also said that it expected the recovery in the Turkish economy to remain strong in the near term.
"Growth is likely to exceed 6 percent this year owing to base effects and solid within-year momentum from credit-driven demand," IMF said, adding the current account deficit was expected to widen to 4.75 percent of GDP on buoyant import growth, with the resumption of growth and abundant global capital flows.
Commenting on Turkey's fiscal order as well, IMF said its directors welcomed the preparation of a new fiscal rule, adding they expected such rule to significantly strengthen the policy framework.
Directors waited for the rapid approval of the fiscal order draft legislation and they hoped the delay in its consideration would not last for too long, the statement also said.

  • 15:46   (ECO) ECONOMY TO GO BACK TO PRE-CRISIS LEVEL BY END OF YEAR, TURKISH CENTRAL BANK HEAD
  • The head official of Turkey's Central Bank said on Saturday that the Turkish economy would go back to the pre-crisis level as of the end of 2010.
Attending a meeting on "tourism economy and monetary policies" held in the Mediterranean province of Antalya, Turkish Central Bank Governor Durmus Yilmaz said the risks in global economy might affect Turkey's exports.
"If we take into consideration the fact that the European Union (EU) is our biggest export market, the problems faced by EU economies constitute an important risk for us as well," Yilmaz said.
Yilmaz noted that expectations would be another aspect of the global crisis' potential effect on Turkey.
"The limited decrease in primary indicators in the recent term, as well as the low level in the consumer confidence index show that the escalation in the Turkish economy will be slow and lasting," he said.
Noting that developments in global economy might affect Turkey through finance flows, Yilmaz said, "Our prediction is that our economy will go back to the pre-crisis level as of the end of the year".
Yilmaz said that there was a more significant revival in developing economies compared to developed ones.
"Turkey has been among rapidly growing countries both in Q4 of 2009 and Q1 of 2010. It is expected to be listed among these countries in 2010 as well," the governor said.
