Liberia confirms 2nd case of Ebola amid fears of relapse

MONROVIA, Liberia

Liberian authorities confirmed a second case of Ebola on Wednesday.

The Liberian health ministry announced the county’s second case of Ebola seven weeks after the UN World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared the West African country to be Ebola-free in May.

The ministry said that the infected person was moved to Monrovia for treatment.

Liberian health authorities have previously warned that despite being officially declared Ebola-free by the WHO on May 9, the West African country nevertheless remained at risk from the deadly virus.

The health ministry said Tuesday that Ebola treatment units in the affected areas would be reactivated in light of the new cases.

The first case of a reemergence of Ebola was a 17-year-old who died Tuesday in Margibi County in the country’s north central region, a Liberian health ministry official said.

The official added that the youth had already been safely buried by a disposal team.

Liberia was the country worst hit by the virus, but became the first to eradicate the outbreak in the region.

The risk of a relapse remains, however.
