WHO: Ebola deaths near 5,000

The World Health Organization has said a total of 4,877 people, mostly from West Africa, have died from the deadly Ebola virus.

GENEVA 

A total of 4,877 people, mostly from West Africa, have died from the deadly Ebola virus, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.

"A total of 9,936 confirmed, probable and suspected cases of Ebola virus disease have been reported in five affected countries, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Spain, and the U.S., and two previously affected countries Nigeria and Senegal up to the end of 19 October," the WHO said in a statement.

A total of 9,911 cases of Ebola and 4,868 deaths were reported in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

The WHO also said a total of 443 healthcare workers have been infected with the virus, out of which 244 have died.
