Turkey: Four policemen killed in Sirnak 'terrorist attack'

SIRNAK, Turkey

 Four policemen were killed and another officer was injured in a roadside bomb attack in the southeastern Sirnak province, the regional governor’s office said Monday.

A remote-controlled roadside bomb was used in the incident at around 9.00 a.m. (0600 GMT), the Sirnak Governor's Office said in a statement.

"A large-scale operation has been launched to find the perpetrators of this terrorist attack," the statement added.

Military helicopter attacked in Sirnak, 1 dead

At least one gendarme private was killed in an attack on a military helicopter in southeastern Sirnak province Monday, the Turkish military said.

According to the Turkish General Staff’s statement on its official website, the attack took place in the province’s Beytussebap district.

The statement said that the slain private had only recently ended his military service.

“He was severely wounded in the attack carried out by PKK [outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party] terrorists on the military chopper at 7.05 a.m. [0400 GMT]; he died at 9.45 a.m. [0645 GMT] despite efforts to save his life at a military hospital in Sirnak,” the statement added.

The Turkish General Staff also offered its condolence to the victim's family in the statement.
