UN condemns Israeli shelling of school and bazaar

BRUSSELS

The European Commission Thursday has strongly condemned the shelling of UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Gaza school and the attack on a street bazaar in Gaza.

The UN released the statement on its website yesterday and said:

"Children were killed as they slept next to their parents on the floor of a classroom in a UN designated shelter in Gaza. Children killed in their sleep; this is an affront to all of us, a source of universal shame. Today the world stands disgraced.”

Maja Kocijancic, a spokeswoman for EU Foreign Policy Chief, Catherine Ashton, called for an "immediate" investigation Thursday after the Gaza school children and civilians were killed when an Israeli shell hit the UN-run school and bazaar in Gaza.

"We call for an immediate and thorough investigation, and we strongly condemn the continued escalation of civil violations which are not acceptable," Kocijancic said.

She also blamed Israeli troops for the bombing of Anadolu Agency’s Gaza office building on Tuesday when the the tenth floor of the building in the west part of the Gaza Strip was hit and badly damaged, however, there were no reports of casualties.
