HAGUE

In the Netherlands, 2.5 million people live below the poverty line, Hague-based Platform31, an urban and regional development organization said on Friday.

“More than 600,000 of them are children," the report said.

The organization noted that the poverty ratio, or the proportion of the population living below the poverty line, in Netherlands has increased 1 percent in last five years, bringing the current poverty ratio in the country to 15.9 percent.

The ratio of children living under the poverty line rose to 17 percent in 2013 from 15.5 percent in 2008, according to the organization.

There has been an increase in social inequality across the European Union, according to a recent study by the Bertelsmann Foundation.
