Finland's total energy consumption decreased by 7 percent in the first half of 2014 from the corresponding period in 2013, according to Statistics Finland's preliminary data released on Monday.

The energy consumption in the northern European country, for the first half of 2014, amounted to around 190 billion kilowatt-hour (kwh), said the Finnish statistics institution.

The drop in consumption could be related to a fall in industrial production due to economic woes, an official from Statistics Finland said.

Furthermore, net imports of electricity to Finland increased by 26 percent, thus diminishing consumption as energy imports do not require to be processed through transformers.

The country only generates about 80 billion kWh per year, the majority from imported fossil fuels, such as coal and gas, according to Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy

Still, Finland boasts a powerful domestic nuclear energy production with four nuclear power units, providing nearly 30 percent of its electricity.

The Finnish government has aimed to promote the efficient use of energy, including decreasing the need for imported energy.

The Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy has indicated that saving energy and enhancing the efficiency of energy consumption were among the country’s main goals.
