Norwegian jazz, a Syrian wedding singer and the 52nd International Antalya Film Festival are this week’s highlights

 52nd International Antalya Film Festival

Turkey’s southern coast is set to host the 52nd International Antalya Film Festival between Nov. 29 and Dec. 6.

Award-winning British actor Jeremy Irons will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s festival, organizers said on Wednesday.

The 67-year-old actor will attend a screening of his 1988 psychological thriller Dead Ringers and answer questions from the audience after the film, organizers added.

Icelandic film director Fridrik Thor Fridriksson will be jury president of the international competition at this year festival.

The seven-member jury includes panelists from the U.S., Romania, Belgium and Turkey.

Ten films will be competing at this year’s festival for which the best movie will receive a €50,000 [$53,500] award.

 Syrian musician to dance for Istanbulites

Syrian musician Omar Souleyman is a frequent visitor to Istanbul stages.

This time, the 49-year-old singer will be performing at Istanbul’s Babylon Bomonti concert hall on Nov. 28.

Souleyman performs traditional Middle Eastern songs, both in Kurdish and in Arabic, and is known for mingling traditional songs with techno music.

In the past, Souleyman has worked with the likes of Icelandic alternative singer-songwriter Bjork.

 Norwegian jazz band to perform in Istanbul

Jaga Jazzist, a Norwegian instrumental jazz-rock band, will take to the stage at Istanbul’s CRR Concert Hall on Nov. 29.

Brothers Lars and Martin Horntveth founded the multi-instrumental band in 1994.

The experimental jazz group will be performing songs from their latest album Starfire, which hit music markets this year.

British music magazine Clash praised the band writing: “At its best, Norwegian experimental jazz ensemble Jaga Jazzist sounds like no other group in the world.”

 Sultan of Turkish cinema’s new film to hit theaters

Not So Far Away (Uzaklarda Arama) a film by Turkan Soray, dubbed the ‘sultan’ of Turkish cinema, will hit movie theaters on Friday.

A prolific actress in Turkish cinema, Soray returned to directing after more than three decades.

The screenplay was written by Turkey’s critically acclaimed film director, Onur Unlu.

Not So Far Away tells the story of a big-city tavern’s relocation to a conservative and unwelcoming town.
