Women's basketball: France and Australia cruise ahead

ANKARA

The second day of the FIBA World Championship for Women saw France and Australia chalk up easy victories against their opponents.

France dominated Mozambique to run out eventual 89-45 winners in Group B, the European side’s first victory of the tournament.

Playing in Ankara, France were in control from start to finish as they only conceded 21 points to Mozambique in the first half, beating them 47-21.

Although the third quarter started poorly for both teams, France managed to drop another 24 points against a weak Mozambique defense and expanded the lead to 30 after the third quarter, 71-31.

Mozambique only shot 25 percent from the field against France's superb 57.6 percent.

The rest of the game held no surprises as France beat Mozambique by 44 points.

French center Sandrine Gruda was on top form again, with 19 points and 7 rebounds. She was joined by shooting guard Paoline Salagnac and center Helena Ciak, who scored 13 and 12 respectively.

For Mozambique, center Leia Dongue recorded a ‘double-double’ with 18 points and 11 rebounds but it was only a consolation score for the losing side.

Australia - South Korea: 87-54

Australia continued their dominant performance and beat South Korea by 33 points, 87-54.

The Aussie ladies started the match strongly and finished the first quarter 16 points ahead, 25-9.

South Korea never answered the challenge from Australia and were down 23 points after the second half, 45-22.

The game just got better at the second half for Australia as they got their second victory of the tournament.

Australia's shooting guard Penny Taylor scored 11 points, pulled down 4 rebounds and dished out 5 assists in an all-round performance. Five players from Australia were able to score double-digit points; forward Laura Hodges was the top scorer for her team with 14.

Small forward Younjoo Kim's 17 points was the highest individual tally of the game but it was not enough for South Korea.

Two more games are ongoing as the Czech Republic face Japan in a Group A match in Ankara and Angola takes on China in a Group D clash in Istanbul.
