BILBAO, Spain

Basketball World Cup favorites the U.S.A. vanquished New Zealand 98-71 on Tuesday to establish themselves at the top of their group.

The Group C game in Bilbao, Spain, saw America cruise to a comfortable win in which they dictated the tempo of the play in a fast-paced and physical match.

U.S. center Anthony Davis played an important role, scoring 21 points and taking nine rebounds.

Power forward Kenneth Faried was also in red-hot form, completing a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson each managed to reach double-digit points.

The New Zealanders tried to fight back through B.J. Anthony, who was top scorer with 11 points; Everard Bartlett, on nine points; and Corey Webster and Isaac Fotu each contributing eight points.

Unbeaten so far in the competition, the U.S.A. now sit at the top of Group C while New Zealand, who have lost their all matches, are in fifth place.

New Zealand face Ukraine on Wednesday at 15.00 CET (14.00 GMT). The U.S.A. will play the Dominican Republic at 21.30 CET.
